First Year of Competition
2001

Why did you start?
My partner Toby had always been into stage rallying, but in 2001 that came to an end when foot and mouth struck. We also bought a house around that time. The rally car got sold and still longing for the need of competition he decided to take up sprinting, which I thought looked like fun. I had always been into watching motorsport, but never dreamed I would be taking part myself.

I started off double entering with him in his daily driver, a turbocharged Ford Puma. Once I had done a few events I swapped over to using my Ford Racing Puma (NA) in class A2 as I was much more comfortable with pushing hard in my daily road car.

I used this for a few years, but because it was underpowered and weighed quite a bit it wasn’t competitive in Class A2 against the likes of Lotus Elise's and Honda CRX’s. In addition my partner, Toby, was struggling against the competition in A3 so we decided to build a dedicated sprint car to try and win the class and enable us to be more competitive, whilst still leaving us our road cars for Monday mornings.

Once again it had to be a puma as we had owned them for so long that we knew them inside out. 18 months later we finally finished it – another turbocharged puma, with more power (280bhp), 100kgs lighter, bucket seats, rear roll cage, adjustable suspension, anti-lag, traction / launch control, carbon bonnet / boot and data logging to name a few mods!

It done the job, in the first season out Toby won all 6 events in the ASWMC championship that we entered and I came 2nd in class twice and also fastest Qtr mile in class, my best ever season!

Plans for 2008 - ASWMC Sprint Championship full season and also taking my ARDs test and doing a few rounds of the 750mc Stock Hatch Championship towards the end of the year
